Some of the popular Parsi theatre directors in Mumbai are:


Sam Kerawala

Sam Kerawala: He started his theatre career during schooldays, back in 1953, when he assisted on lighting and backstage. He was spotted by Adi Marzban, while performing a meagre role in a play directed by Sam Mahableshwarwalla. Subsequently, working as a stage manager under Marzban, he continued to act in innumerable plays. Soon, he took to direction and till date has directed about 160 plays. He also acts in films and has done a lot of commercials including ‘Dhara Oil’, which he considers his best.


Bomi Dotiwala:

Bomi Dotiwala: Along with wife Dolly, he started his theatre career with Adi Marzban in 1961, first as a singer and then graduating to dancing, doing lead roles alongside. He has spent 43 years on stage, acting in famous plays including the record breaking ‘Sagan ke Vaghan’, which was performed 104 times in one year. He and Dolly have been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in the field of theatre by the WZO. Very recently, he was seen in ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ and ‘Lagey Raho Munna Bhai’.


Dinyar Contractor

Dinyar Contractor: He started his career in 1967, side-by-side with Burjor Patel. This 70-year-old actor/ director has been noticed in innumerable films and TV serials. An actor by experience and writer and director out of compulsion, he produced his first play, ‘Mamani Musafri’, during the ’80s. He has also acted in Gujarati plays and now even directs Hindi plays.


Cyrus Dastoor

Cyrus Dastoor: The last actor to be directed by Adi Marzban, he has acted in Hindi and Gujarati plays (including on Doordarshan and All India Radio). He has acted in 56 full-length and one-act plays and directed and produced about 20 plays. He has also acted in feature films including ‘Djoomketu’, ‘Pestonjee’ and ‘Dr. Zakir Hussain’, and directs a tele-serial, ‘Humata Hukta Hvarshta’. He runs the Universal Theatre Group in Mumbai.


Dinyar Tirandaz

Dinyar Tirandaz: He started theatre in his early 20’s with Eruch Pavri. Later, he joined Homi Tavadia and then Adi Marzban. He, along with wife Roshan, did one-act plays with Dorab Mehta. He also acted in the tele-serial ‘Nukkad’. During the mid-’90s he got a break in Bollywood with Mahesh Bhatt. He still directs Parsi ‘nataks’, along with his wife.
